Zambia has exited as an independent nation since 1964 before which it was administered by The British South Africa Company (1891-1923) as the territory of Northern Rhodesia and There after became a British Protectorate.

Thereafter it became part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland from 1953 to 1963.

The ancestors of most of Zambia's modern ethnic groups arrived from the present day Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) between the 16th and the 18th Centuries.

In 1953 the Fedration of Rhodesia and Nyasaland comprising Northern amid protests locally and abroad.

The United National Independence Party (UNIP) was formed in 1959 by Kenneth Kaunda  with a purpose to oppose British rule.

In 1964 the Federation was dissolved leading to the Independence of the Republic of Zambia on 24th October 1904 with Kenneth Kaunda elected as its first president.

   

 The Origins of the name "ZAMBIA"

at the helm of the struggle for independence the freedom fighters did not only want freedom but to rename the country. After long Consultations the gallant men and women. settled for African's greatest and fourth longest rivers in Africa, The Zambezi River,. it's from this mighty river that Zambia gets its name. This river has its source at the Kaleni Hills in the North Western Province and it traverses 3,540 Kilometer traversing through six Countries namely, Zambia, Angol,Namibia , Botswana , Zimbabwe and Mozambique , before flowing into the Indian Ocean.
